Description
- Short Description
Our Cat25 - #25 is equipped with a Mercury 9.9 electric start outboard. Please review all notes here in the boat listing/checkout requirements to learn how to operate the outboard before using the boat.
The Catalina 25 is a legendary, high-volume trailerable cruising sailboat designed by Frank Butler and built by Catalina Yachts from 1976 to 1991. [1, 2, 3]
Over 5,000 units were launched, making it one of the most popular and affordable 25-foot boats ever produced. It is widely celebrated as a forgiving, versatile family cruiser suited for lakes, bays, and coastal waters. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Members please review these Instructions for operating the tilt and throttle settings before using this boat to learn about the tilting and adjusting the throttle on the merc 9.9 outobard.
For starting the Merc 9.9 here is a helpful video
If you have not used or practiced with the "in tiller shifting" outboard design we highly recommend practicing shifting at the dock (ensure your fenders are in place and that you will not contact the dock or dock box) to get comfortable using the throttle / shifter mechanism. When doing so simply go through the full range of controls; shifting, motor movements & boat tiller movements you will be using to maneuver the boat. It's important to take advantage of the full sweep possible of both engine and boat tiller to exercise the maximum control over the boat. Warning: it's easy to accidentally turn the throttle the wrong way and suddenly be powering forward when intending to reverse, etc - so practice pays off!
Also note: check for the appropriate throttle tension friction! On the motor tiller handle there is an adjustable throttle friction tensioner that makes the throttle handle grip either easy to move or locks it in place (if cruising for a long distance). In general and certainly when docking and maneuvering the throttle tensioner should be loose for quick easy throttle adjustments and shifting.
Here is a link to a general image of where this is located and what it looks like - design may vary between engine models.
If for some reason you have tensioned this it should be loosened again and left in a mode where it's easy to rotate the throttle handle!
To use the Electric Start function: battery selector need not be "on". If starter doesn't activate upon pushing the button double check that the engine is in neutral.
You will also note upon inspecting the engine that this engine does not tilt up - there is not enough clearance off of the transom. So the bracket will allow you to raise the engine but do not attempt to tilt up.
