Island Time

Description
- Short Description
The CAL 2-25 is a 25-foot fiberglass pocket cruiser and
masthead sloop (a single-mast sailboat where the front jib sail reaches the very top of the mast) designed by C. William "Bill" Lapworth and built from 1977 to 1983. [1, 2]
Also known as the Cal 25-2 or Cal 25 Mark II, this second-generation boat replaced the older 1965–1976 Cal 25 model. It features a wider hull and a raised cabin roof to fix the cramped space of the original design. Builders produced about 392 hulls during its production run. [1]

- Fuel Range Notes
At wide-open throttle (WOT), a Tohatsu 8hp outboard
consumes about 1.1 gallons per hour (4.3 liters/hour) for a 2-stroke or 0.85 gallons per hour (3.2 liters/hour) for a 4-stroke.

Fuel Consumption Rates
4-Stroke (at 5,500 RPM / WOT): ~0.85 gal/hr (3.2 L/hr)
2-Stroke (at 5,000 RPM / WOT): ~1.1 gal/hr (4.3 L/hr)
Cruising Speed / Mid-Range (approx. 50% to 60% throttle): Consumption drops significantly to roughly 0.4 to 0.5 gal/hr as smaller outboards operate much more efficiently when not pushed to their maximum limit.

Calculating Fuel Range:
To calculate your total cruising range, use this basic formula:
Range (in hours)=Usable Fuel Capacity (gallons)Fuel Consumption Rate (gal/hr)Range (in hours) equals the fraction with numerator Usable Fuel Capacity (gallons) and denominator Fuel Consumption Rate (gal/hr) end-fraction
Range (in hours)=Usable Fuel Capacity (gallons)Fuel Consumption Rate (gal/hr)
Range (in distance)=Range (in hours)×Speed (knots or mph)Range (in distance) equals Range (in hours) cross Speed (knots or mph)
Range (in distance)=Range (in hours)×Speed (knots or mph)
Example Scenarios (Using a standard 3.1-gallon / 12-liter external tank)
At Full Throttle (4-stroke, 0.85 gal/hr):
Total run time: ~3.6 hours.
If your boat averages 15 mph at WOT, your range is roughly 54 miles (leaving a 10% safety reserve).
Nissan Tohatsu Parts
At Cruising Speed (estimated 0.45 gal/hr):
Total run time: ~6.8 hours.
If you cruise efficiently at 6 mph (common for displacement sailboat hulls or small dinghies), your range is roughly 40 miles.
Important Safety Factors
The 1/3 Rule: Always use the rule of thirds for marine fuel—use 1/3 of your fuel to get out, 1/3 to get back, and keep 1/3 in reserve for wind, current, and emergencies.
Hull Load & Drag: Heavy gear, marine growth on the hull, and an incorrect propeller pitch will increase fuel burn.
